What we delivered
The rejuvenation of a local historical interest and heritage asset, which was once an integral part of Mansfield’s textile industry, with the development of 34 one and two bed apartments and townhouses.
Understanding the housing requirements within the local area and defining a development strategy allowed the potential of the site to unlocked for maximum profitability, as well as breathing new life into this key strategic site.
What was the initial brief?
The building is of local historic interest and a heritage asset, and we were commissioned to develop plans to sensitively restore, extend and remodel the existing Premier Works building.
How we did it
The site, which was formerly built by a prominent local textile business owner, had eroded over consecutive years following the gradual decline of the Mansfield textile industry.
Working alongside a local developer and the District Council, we developed a plan to restore, extend and remodel the building.
Researching the historic records for the site and the local neighbourhoods gave us a good understanding of the building’s context within the area’s 18th Century industrial past.
While not listed, the building formed an important part of the local area, and so it was important to ensure the scale and the character came through in the new development.
Our approach led the new properties to be designed around a central courtyard, as well as create the impression of one large building with new additions facing onto surrounding streets. This allowed us to marry the old and the new.
Using the dense street settings and narrower streets as inspiration, we inverted the townhouse accommodation with bedrooms and home offices on the lower two levels, with living accommodation above benefitting from the best possible natural daylight and individual rooftop gardens.
